This was done mainly due to the grunge era..popularized 1st by Kurt Cobain's Nirvana. He made it to where (even in this day in highschool kids clothing) poor kids could get away wearing their dads beat up hole ridden levi's. The bigger the jeans the better. All you needed was some cool sweater or mini tee to accompany it and some vans and you were in!

ok the baggy pant did come from prisons but and they did take their belts to prevent the prisoners from killin themselves. but the really didnt need the belts bc they gave them clothes that fit, but the baggy pant came from the prisoners that were available for sex from their other prison mates.....maybe that changes your point of view on how cool they are.....now that you kno where they came from.....

PS- The Rave scene really kicked off the baggy stuff. We had "Phat Clown" pants back in '90-'92. Other brands were FreshJive and Sjobeck. These were SO BAGGY! I mean they were able to fit 2 people in them.

I fell that the fashion game has took clothing back to the 1980's. I could not stand those nut-choker pants at all, the only thing I like'd in the 80's was Lacoste, and dats it. And it's like they brought back the 80's but in the greenest way, me personally, I'm Jamaican who lived in Rochester, NY most of my childhood and in the 90's I lived in Miami, FL & Norfolk, VA and I like'd baggy jeans better and custom tailored Italian suits. And the whole style of baggy jeans had the airbrushed graffiti on da fit and have patent leather on both regular & leather baggy jeans and it was great style. I believed that in the early 2000's have combined all the styles at once, and I'm only 32 and I think fashion needs to have every style that suits the consumer.

Not much of a fan of baggy or skinny. Just plain straight leg jeans never go in or out of style. Had tons of JNCOs, purchased at Gadzooks. By 1997, we had them so baggy they literally covered your entire shoe, as if you were floating. We called those hover pants. I had some that were 24" around at the bottom of the leg. Redonkulous.

Kurt didn't even start the baggy jeans trend on purpose. He was very thin and he would always wear tons of layers of clothes, baggy jeans probably just helped hide how thin he really was.

baggy IS ghetto people they make the body look unproportional drag on the ground, rip, and collect dirt not to mention a lot of people who swore by their baggys are now biting once again and switching to skinnies all that "theyre too tight" talk is BS from people whom follow the crowd and have never bothered being uniue with their style

I used to rock baggy jeans for a long time, now going to skinny. Makes me look clean and the chicks dig it. I was never really into baggy jeans, I was just doing it to fit in a look tough. It's starting to get old and they annoy me now. I think I found my style :) really love 'em skinny jeans. Looks clean, especially with low tops. Now I don't have to worry if my shirts shrink a little because I will also look clean. C'mon guys, it's time for skinny jeans 2010-2015+
Lucky - December 08, 2009 - Report this comment
screw skinny jeans, they look pretentious and incredibly uncomfortable. This skinny trend is disgusting, and only seems to encourage this unhealthy anorexic craze. To me, women wearing baggy clothes in the 90s seemed far more confident and in control of their sexuality, unlike the sex objects they have been turned into now.
James - December 28, 2009 - Report this comment
I still wear baggy jeans. Well, to be honest it depends on what one considers "baggy." tight fit jeans have never looked good on anyone except models and those who were blessed with good genetics in the leg department.

Matthew - January 08, 2010 - Report this comment
Baggy jeans are so comfortable. I have worn them since the 90s, and will continue to do so! It sucks that they are hard to find these days. Skinny jeans look gay on men. Why in the hell would a man want to wear jeans that show the exact shape of his legs? What is up with all the dumb "low-rise" tight jeans, tight shirts, and flip flops? The prep look makes people like me want to kick your weak little ass. Why would a woman want to wear tight jeans either unless she is desperately trying to be noticed by a man? It is not cool...it is absolutley stupid looking, and must be terribly uncomfortable...especially on men!! If you are a woman and love tight jeans, men will pay more attention to the shape of your body rather than the integrity of your character. And if only you people realized how ridiculous tight jeans are! If you want to be comfortable and really don't give a crap what people think, go baggy! Maybe grow your hair out to, and forget the gay, preppy "messy look." The skater, gothic, & Hip Hop look of the 90s (without wearing the pants below the waist) was truly a great style, and hopefully JNCO will re-emerge and start making new baggy styles once again. (I will say that pant cuffs larger than 32 inches gets a little on the crazy side though...but still cool.) What happened to JNCO anyway? I'm glad I can still buy Kikwear. Also, music from the 90s was much cooler, had more depth to it, and a much more unique sound than what we have these days...

Baggy Jeans are officially dead here where I live. Finally those damn wannabe gangsters are gone. Here's a little tip ;) Get Super Skinny Jeans Levi's 510 2% spandex They are a lot comfortable than baggy jeans. Those stupid jeans drag on your feet all day and make you look fat.

Person before me is not very bright. "gangsters" weren't te only group of wearing baggy jeans but the grunge era and metal heads. My brother wasn't a gangster but he did wear jenco/jenko jeans. And this isn't about what's in today.

Back then baggy jeans weren't necessarily seen as 'ghetto' I mean my white girlfriends wore baggy jeans more than they'd wear dresses to look... (funny as it sounds) 'sexier'. Even in primary school as you headed towards age 10 and over you kinda dropped the baby doll dresses and headed for like a 'Pink (singer)' look, like a tight t-shirt with baggy jeans (or cargo pants lol). Well that's what I noticed with the then teen fashion. Man when I was ten I had a friend who was so obsessed with Pink the singer that she even cut off all her hair and dressed like her. It was cool though everyone in my class thought she looked awesome. Nowadays if you do that at age ten you're just looked at weird. Heading towards the late 90's early 2000's I think girls made baggy jeans look to suit them more. I remember me and my friends trying to look like the back-up dancers of Limp Bizkit's 'Rollin' music video with the long hair and backward cap and halfway singlet with baggy azzz jeans. The baggier the sexier. Nowadays its the thinner the better (skinny jeans). Don't like that concept so much. Btw love this site brings back so much memories!

I think the baggy or a t least a more loose and casual style will come back sometime in this coming decade. Overall fashion is starting to hit the disgusting obnoxious look of the late 80s and early 90s, that will bring about an aesthetic shift that will return a more toned down and minimalistic 'anti-fashion'. Hopefully this shift will kill, emo(I've been hearing the 'actual emos', and not the trendy hot topic clones, stopped wearing tight clothes and the emo uniform years ago), hipsters, and glam hop; and then some music with real depth and integrity will make a comeback as well.

I always had baggy jeans when I was in high school. I was as far from the ghetto as possible but I loved the "ghetto look" and always wore baggy low pants and backwards hat. I was a very nice kid but I loved to look bad. I also liked the big pockets since I always carried around a pack of cigarettes, pack of gum, etc.

Oh goodness! My school is stiil really stuck in this style. Yeah we are ghetto as heck but we don't care, no skinny jeans in sight! All the guys do this incept my redneck boys. And the girls that wear them wear tight tank tops. I was always a country girl so i never wore these, but I never wore tight jeans either.

The huge, baggy pants were characteristic of the 90s, for the entire decade, really. You started seeing them in the late 80s, when they were worn with oversized shirts and oversized, shoulder-padded jackets. I had a roommate at the time who thought it was scandalous that the baggy, boxer underwear was intended to show as the pants slid down. And slide down they did, sometimes to the ankles. A good thing buff, bodybuilders' bodies were also in style at the time. In order to keep them up, you'd often see guys walking in a telltale way down the street: one hand in the pocket balled up in a fist as they grasped to keep the pants up. We called 'em skater pants where I lived, but I was always so skinny that normal pants looked baggy on me so I didn't really partake.
Fran - January 19, 2011 - Report this comment
In the early 90s, baggy pants tapered to a narrow ankle but were still really baggy otherwise. By the end of the decade, they were still hugely baggy but stayed full to the floor, covering the feet, the same shape as real 1920s Oxford bags really. (There were also 70s-style flared/boot-cut pants at the end of the 90s, but those fit snug to the knee and then flared to the floor. Those are different from these.)

Skinny jeans on guys today are just wrong. Why would you want to wear something so tight and uncomfortable? Also, baggy jeans aren't "gangster."Skaters and rockers wore them as well. KURT COBAIN DID NOT start the baggy jean phase. It seems like he always wore regular Levis 501s. In the '90s when I was a teen, it didn't seem like guys and girls cared about style as much then, for that reason, i believe we were happier.

Only fake goth/skater/grunge wannabes shop at Hot Topic.. Grunge was NEVER about labels, or even brand new items from stores at the mall.. If you weren't born in the 70s, you don't know squat about the 90s.. and being a little 10 year old in the 90s doesn't mean you know the 90s either, mid to late teens OK.. Grunge was the anti-label, except when it came to shoes, but it wasn't even about the label itself, it was the look of the shoe, such as Airwalks or Vanns.. it was about a shoe being able to take a lot of abuse.. which, back then, Airwalks and Vanns could, unlike today.. Most people wore grunge went to thrift shops, even vintage stuff was big with grunge when it came to the girls, especially 1960s and 1970s mini dresses and shoes.. All these kids on here that were born in the 90s, and think they know all about it, are full of it.. Especially that girl up there talking about if people want real grunge fashion go to Hot Topic.. My generation, the generation where grunge began would laugh at you, that type of laugh that triggers asthma attacks in a person that doesn't even have asthma. You're a self-righteous little girl that doesn't know what she's talking about. People talking about baggy jeans falling off people's butts and everything are confusing baggy jeans with the "style" of "sagging".. and they are NOT the same thing.. "sagging" is when the jeans are hanging off someone's butt, or showing the tops of their boxers, even people today in skinny jeans still wear their pants in the "sagging" style. Baggy jeans however, were not falling off people, they were just made with longer and much wider legs. I still have all my baggy jeans from HS, I still wear them to this very day, and they're never off my butt.. Grunge was nothing more, than a rehash of the 1960s and 1970s with a bit of Nirvana thrown in for good measure.. As most people that were into Grunge were HEAVILY into the 1960s and 1970s, when it came to fashion, the music, and even the time period and that whole sense of being free and standing up against injustice in the system.. Grunge WAS so much MORE than cheap, retard clothes from Hot Topic.. the next generation of "Grungers" totally RUINED what Grunge was about and stood for.. It's like how "Spooky Kids" "Mansonites" and "Emo" dweebs totally tainted Goth.. You're the type to list Candlebox and Bush as grunge bands.. or wouldn't be able to tell the difference between grunge and post-grunge.. Or realize that grunge only had about a 5 year stint.. So, if you're claiming to be grunge after 1995, you're full of it. Little brats took something pure and took a crap on it.. *smh* Do what you like, dress how you like, think how you like.. but don't use a label that doesn't even apply to what you're doing. You can't take elements from several things and call it one thing.. You can mix cheese and eggs, but a pancake you will not get.

Im glad someone finaly pointed out the difference between sagging and baggy. I have quite a few pairs of kikwear and wear them still to this day, my smallest pair is the 42 inch bottoms. I get more compliments than anything wearing those and people asking me where i found them. Baggy jeans are fun to wear and extremely comfortable. And the fact that they drag on the ground and get destroyed is what theyre supposed to do, would not be the same if the didnt drag. Glad theres people still giving these pants love.

When I still see boys wearing the baggy jean look, holding onto their penis to keep their pants from falling down. I feel like filming them from the back and front, then showing it to Middle schoolers of how not to have hip problems when they get older. If you want to broadcast that you have been sexually abused while incarcerated, then, you are broadcasting you need help. Otherwise, if you didn’t know of that reference, what is the message you’re trying to convey?

It was SOLO Semore brand jeans for me. Probably a knock-off brand for JNCO and other Wide leg jeans. Thought they were so cool especially when I saw the corduroy versions.
