User Stories and Comments
The following are comments left about Spiral Perms from site visitors such as yourself. They are not spell checked or reviewed for accuracy. Males and females were getting straighter and straighter hair in the 90's. I don't remember too many curlies in my scene. I guess it was a reaction to the 80's "Mall Bangs" all the mainstream girls wore.
I DO remember this bc my grandmother forced one on me when I was 8, 10 and 11 while being "babysat" it looked like I had a frizzy rat nest on my head I HATED HATED HATED these things w/ the fierce fiery passion of a million suns!!!! However threw this time frame I only knew of 3 other girls to have perms and only one of them looked good w/ it.
Girls with long hair would get these perms then put lots and lots of gel, mousse or hairspray in their hair to make it look "wet." If you touched their hair it was stiff and it crunched!
Curly hair was still cool, but long and parted in the middle. No bangs like in the 80's. Mariah Carey, Scary Spice etc. Before the dreaded flat iron.
Ha! My mom made me and my older sister get these perms. I hated it! I cried it was so hideous to me. But those were the days lol
Oh, my friend got one of these when she was in first grade. She looked like an awful poodle. >:]
I used to get these perms in the 80s. My mom in law used to roll my hair in the rods, which I still have. Now my hair is nearly 4 feet long, and I don't want to mess with that any more.
ACTUALLY...Mariah Carey's hair is naturally curly, she just straightens it all the time. And yes, I had one, a few times. My mom and grandma were always making me get it cause I had "unfortunate straight hair." I'm white, but my hair is like that of an Asian or Indian persons, so curling irons do NOTHING! lol! My mom was always buying "pick" combs and this gawd-aweful goop to put in my hair, and it always made it crunchy. I love my straight locks, never again will I have a perm! STRAIGHT HAIR LOVE! LOL!
I remember several girls I went to high school with in the mid 90's were getting theses perms. They looked and smelled awful.
