It was spicy flavoured nachos that came out the same time as Cool Ranch from Doritos, but I can't remeber the name. They were really red though, just caked in seasoning, and lasted only a few years before it was cancelled. It may have been reincarnated into the now "Spicy Nacho" flavour they have, which tastes almost but not quite the same.

User Stories and Comments
The following are comments left about Salsa Rio Doritos from site visitors such as yourself. They are not spell checked or reviewed for accuracy. I am always asking everyone if they remember these. I believe they came out in the late 80's and faded away in the early 90's. Loved 'em!
Awesome! I Googled Salsa Rio Doritos and found this. These were the best chips ever and I think about them often. The more you ate the hotter they got!
I googled Salsa Rio also and found this site.
memory: boy scout campouts.
food: salsa rio doritos and nutrigrain bars.
Nothing Better!
:)
Why would they ever take these away from the world?
Googled this also. Glad to see there were others that loved them!
Is it me or was there a faint orange peel/citrus flavour? I seem to recall some batches had this flavour present and others not so much.
Frito Lay should bring these back!!!
I'm another googler and found this site. I loved the Salsa Rio Doritos. My mouth would absolutely water in anticipation of the next bite. My first job out of high school, I would grab a bag of them on my way to work. That was 89-90. I keep hoping they'll bring them back or something just as good. I keep trying all their new flavors and nothing has come close.
I agree totally...and i am glad im not the only one who remembers these...most people think im crazy and dont remember them...
Doritos dropped the "Rio" and actually released them a few years ago under the name "Zesty Salsa." I was soooo stoked they we're back! But no sooner did they re-release them, guess what??? Yup, discontinued. :Sigh: Then recently, they re-released them ONCE AGAIN under just the plain old name "Salsa." but if you can believe the effin nerve of these guys, they disappeared from the shelves FOR A 3rd TIME! They still appear on their website as a flavor, but I can't find them anywhere. Apparently they might only be sold regionally now. Damn you Frito-Lay, damn you to hell!!! If anyone finds em, let me know!
I think I ate one of those lunch-sized bags every day through middle school. None of the Salsa Verde, Spicy Nacho combos taste anything like my favorite Salsa Rio Doritos that were always washed down with a couple of Oreos. I've been trying to console myself with Fiery Habanero to burn my taste buds, but it's still not the same.
Another Google site search here. Loved them Salsa Rio Flavored Doritos from back in the day. I used to get those, a Turkey and Cheese sandwich and a pintt of OJ for lunch and everyone would try to trade for the chips, which I always replied the same answer: NO! I still have fond memories of those chips. No other Dorito flavor has come close, but Sweet Spicy Chili Doritos is almost there. The catch is, they discontinued them outside of anything other than a Subway sandwich shop! Damn you Frito-Lay!!!! Bring them back!!!
Gregory, I have found the Sweet Spicy Chili doritos in DariMart and 7-Eleven stores in my home state of Oregon. They might be found in 7-Elevens in your area, or you might be able to order them online somehow. I just finished a bag today, and they tasted quite good. They were close, but they weren't quite the same as Salsa Rio Doritos.
God those chips were the best! I used to devour them whenever I was in the student union building at college. Nothing beats Salsa Rio, Beer and Euchre!
I absolutely loved these! I try almost every flavor of Doritos that comes out, even that horrid Mountain Dew flavor, and I've never found one I love as much as Salsa Rio.
Oh my gosh I LOVED these too. Why the hell pull these off the shevles? Can't we start a petition to bring these back? I'm thinking that is why the economy truly tanked!! LOL
Just like most of you, I ask people if they remember them, and nobody does! How do you now remember that kind of taste bud party? I agree with you Brack....these mighty Salsa Rio Doritos being pulled from the shelves could possibly be the reason for the economy taking a crap!
These were great chips. Frito lay should bring them back to see how they sell.
i constantly think about salsa rio doritos too. i cant even buy a bag of doritos anymore because im that upset that they dont have it for me to buy. i dont enjoy anyother doritos flavors.
i also keep thinking of how much i love this unavailable flavour, it bugs me that cool ranch is still available.
salsa rio was great, but also looking for flamin hot doritos. had em in the 90s but now...
Hey guys, it's great to find a forum with people who loved this chip as much as me. I literally went through Salsa Rio withdraw when they took it off the shelves.
I make shift substitution is to get the spicy doritos, sprinkle with some onion powder, garlic power and lemon pepper. It's not the same, but it's as close as you're going to get
I loved these too, so I emailed Frito-Lay to find out if they would ever have Salsa Rio Doritos again. The response: Thank you for taking the time to write to us. We hear you. We are so glad to know one of our past products reached your "favorite snack" list! We understand each brand or flavor will end up being a front runner for someone. We wish we could carry them all. Regrettably, some snacks must be discontinued in order to make room for new ideas and the ever changing market demand. We will happily note your interest and count you personally as a loyal fan of Salsa Rio Doritos. We appreciate you sharing your comments with us. We hope you will turn to our other Frito-Lay brands to find another new favorite in the snack food aisle. Please watch for new flavor introductions. Best regards, Linda Frito-Lay Consumer Affairs 010652298A
Im so happy to see im not alone I miss Salsa Rio Doritos so much(tear)
I LOVED the Salsa Rio during my high school/college days in the 1980s. Sounds gross, but after a night of drinking, I loved them topped with chicken salad!!! Lately, the best Doritos are the Buffalo Ranch, but why wouldn't they make them w/ Blue cheese instead of ranch? After all, buffalo wings are usually served with blue cheese.
THEY NEED TO BRING SALA RIO BACK!! OF ALL THE CRAPPY FLAVORS THEY HAVE....SOMEONE IN PRODUCTION NEEDS TO BE SLAPPED SILLY.
I used to eat these with a six pack of full size whatchamacalit bars, but they put caramel in them and messed them up! Ah, well I guess some things are too good to last.
I was trying to think of the name of this chip for a while now. Recently somebody was describing an old school Doritos flavor and I new instantly what they were talking about but still couldn't remember the name, I searched all over the internet until I decided to see if ebay had any vintage Doritos ads. Unbelievably there was a listing for an old Salsa Rio advertisement. I felt so relieved finally knowing the name of my favorite Doritos.
I LOVED this flavor (though I couldn't remember it's name- just what the bag looked like: it had veggies on it)! When it came out around the time of cool ranch, most of my family loved the cool ranch flavor, but my mom & I loved this one. I was really bummed when it was discontinued. Lately though I tried their new 3rd degree burn: Hananero & really enjoyed it as well. That's actually what reminded me of my first ever fave doritos flavor: Salsa Rio (I'm glad I now have a name to go with my memory of the bag, lol)
I effin loved these. I have fond memories of walking miles to the store with my brother to get a bag of these.
What happened to Doritos? I almost hate them now! Salsa Rio flavor was great, as was the Taco flavor back in the day, so of course they had to go. Then they discontinue the best flavor (Flamin' Hot) and change the recipes on the old flavors.
Nacho Cheesier? Cooler Ranch? No, something else is different with these. And these new combo flavors just aren't very good. Get back to the original recipes Frito Lay! They were far superior to what you're trying to sell now.
I finally found the support group I was looking for. I have been desperately searching for Salsa Rio Doritos or anything like them for years now. Salsa Rio Doritos eclipsed all other flavours combined in my opinion. They weren't here for a long time, only a good time. Years later the flavour was reincarnated as Texas Tang, but that too was short lived. Since then I've been hoping to find anything resembling the flavour without any luck. Also, I would have to agree with ZMBDOG, Taco Bell Doritos were excellent. I mean, you tried the first nacho, and it was ok, but the more you ate the better they got. Bring Salsa Rio BACK!
SALSA RIO DORTITOS- BEST DORITOS EVER MADE!!! WE WANT THEM BACK!!!!!!!!!!
Try the new 3rd degree burn "Scorchin Habanero" Doritos. I think you will find that they are pretttty close to the original Salsa Rio flavor :)
I wrote a song about these chips. They are the BEST!!!
I always talk about those doritos and I want them back! Why would the discontinue the best chips they ever had, I mean the could keep those cool ranch doritos. I couldn't remember the name until I googled them. if you ever had these chips you were probably an 80s baby! Everybody let's make them bring em back
My brother brought over a bag of the new Taco flavored in the vintage bag. The first words out of my mouth were, "Do they have Salsa Rio?" Alas, they don't.., yet. Somebody should write congress or, start a petition or something.
Remember calling Frito Lay when I was 12 to see what happened to them. They said it was a territory thing. They were my all time favorite hope they come back one day
I remember these. Great flavor! I miss them too.
I love nachos doritos! But salsa rio was always the best flavor! What happened to them and why won't they bring them back? We need to demand these chips to be brought back! Every time I have a bag of nachos doritos I can't help but to think about salsa rio doritos. I sure do love and miss salsa rio Doritos!!!!! What's it going to take for frito lay to bring these Back?????
I absolutely Love These chips.. My memory of them is when I was 4yrs old sitting on my dads lap when he would get home from work and we would just destroy a bag.. I was that young, yet I remember just how great they were, and no other Doritos Chip can compare. Bring Back Salsa Rio!!!
I wish they would bring the flavor back. I think of it every time I see a Doritos bag. There are so many odd flavors now no reason not to bring them back. I remember eating them with my friends after school. Delicious!!!!
Oh my goodness, its nice to see that so many people remebered the Salsa Rio flavor. I remember the onion, tomato and jalapeno on the bag. Good memories. Best chips ever.
Just found this site as well from a Google seach. The Salsa Rio were by far the best flavor ever put on a Dorito. I just contacted Frito-Lay and suggested they bring it back (original recipe). I think we all need to keep contacting them and requesting it. Maybe, just maybe, our voice will be heard. To contact them just go to the Frito-Lay website, about us, contact us and select company related or other. Let them know we want these back!!!
I remember it burned my tongue in a good way cause I craved more! They should get Jay Leno to redo the commercial now as a way to bring it back I just remember him shaking that maraca in the commercial!
LOVED,LOVED,LOVED to the infinity'eth power, these chips! I called them years ago as well, as I'm sitting here eating the Taco flavor I can only hope they bring Salsa Rio back. I think I got depressed when they took these away it should have been illegal! They should have gave a warning lol!
i wasnt old enough to read the last time i had these chips it took me forever to figure out there name. All i knew was i liked the doritos bag with the peppers on it no the cheese. I want these back.
When I ate them they were called only ZESTY SALSA...They came in an orange/yellow bag.. They were my FAV! And they were always so coated in the seasoning. Every chip these are by far the best. I have been looking online to purchase in other countries or states- but no one has them.
I used to eat them for breakfast everyday- sneaking to the store before school when I got off the school bus.
I really wish they would bring them back- even Nacho Cheesier tastes different and not as good as before. The Hamburger Dorritos?! Eww! Bring back ZESTY SALSA! A party in my mouth! :)
Omg these chips were amazing! I couldn't remember the name either so I had to google them. But as soon as I seen the bag w/ the veggies, I knew. I enjoyed these sooo much as a kid. Favorite chips ever!!! Bring them back!
I loved Salsa Rio too, but last night tried the new Tapatio Doritos and they taste similar. I find it to be the closest thing out there.
bring back the zesty salsa rio Dorritos bag back please
OMG! I could never remember the name, only the pic on the bag. They need to really bring this flavor back!
they need to bring these back.... i loved them as a kid. memories...
OMG!! Yes, Salsa Rio Doritos were my FAVORITE!! I wish the would bring them back!!!
You guys are not alone! I just contacted Frito-Lay and begged them to bring back our favorite chip!
I got the same exact reply from Frito-Lay as CC, word for word. Customer service obviously sends back a standard reply if you contact them through the website. If you are serious about trying to bring this chip back I'd recommend trying to contact a corporate office via telephone or snail mail.
These chips were SOOOO amazing! My favorite chip ever. When I started out on my own after high school in the late 80s, it was a staple of one of my economy meals: Microwave burrito with a slice of cheese on top & hot sauce with a healthy side of Salsa Rio Doritos. Heaven!
Not sure what this is, but I just found it on Moby Picture. It's from a few months ago, so maybe we'll see Salsa Rio again in the near future http://www.mobypicture.com/user/sircharlesdavid/view/10918936
Ok, I'm seriously researching Salsa Rio Doritos... WTF? Seeing a pic of one of the 2 throwback flavors coming in January, Sour Cream and Onion https://twitter.com/#!/DoritosUSA/status/145216130217283584/photo/1 it looks like a Salsa Rio comeback is a possible reality.
They are finally back! I live in the midwest of the US and I found them today at my grocery store called HyVee. I fell in love all over again with these chips. It's been 19 years! They get hotter the more you eat. If only they had the original packaging. https://twitter.com/#!/notaworkaccount/status/148534429030170624/photo/1
Confirmed, they are on the shelf at the local Cub Foods here in MN!
Just purchased a few bags today. Not as hot as I remember. Taste similar to Salsa doritos. These aren't the Salsa Rio I remember. Oh well. Bag of Sour Cream and Onion too. SuperOne Superior Wisconsin!!!
FOUND 'EM BOTH!!!! Salsa Rio not as good as I remember, but close enough, I guess.
I found them at Cub Foods in St.Paul, Mn. I'm eating some right now! Pretty close to originals but not exactly! Whats next Crstal Clear Pepsi lol!
I also found a bag of these tasty Salsa Rio Doritos, in my local Fareway. Very nice to have them again, even if it's just for a limited time. I would say it's my all time favorite flavor of theirs.
There are now available at CVS I live in MD. needless to say my sister and I have been waiting to have these chips again. When I saw them on the stand, I began to scream at the top of my lungs as if i ran into a childhood best friend. If i could have afforded I would have brought the entire supply. I LOVE THESE CHIPS. THANKS FRITO-LAY!
Yes just found them at Randall's which is a Safeway store! I shouted!!!
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They're back!!! WAAAHOOOOOOOOOOO!!
Got the Salsa Rio ones from the local Wal-Mart! May try the SOur Cream and Onion ones too. Now, the just need to revive the other great flavors of the past!!
Yep I found them too....Salsa Rio!! Maybe Frito Lay reads their emails after all. I found them at my local Jewel-Osco. I couldn't believe my eyes.....bought an ice cold Coca Cola to swig them down with.
Saw 'em on display at the local Super Walmart and freaked. These were my favorite Doritos ever! They taste just like I remembered them, and I had the dubious pleasure of introducing them to my teenage son, who scarfed down the rest of the bag after I took some to work. Another generation lovin' the Salsa Rio! Thanks Frito Lay!
Found them here at the local SuperAmerica gas station and almost had a heart attack!! Hell yes, they are back! I think they were slightly spicier back in the day, but other than that, they are the Salsa Rio I remember. (I bet the people who say they taste very different are smokers.)
THESE werent that bad... but i used to get mad eveytime mom grabbed these on accident instead of the nacho cheese ones
Where??L I want sum!!
If these are the same as the ZESTY SALSA Doritos, I want them. NEED them!! I have been searching forever (couldn't remember the Zesty Salsa name, just The Zesty part) and finally found a picture of the Bag. I don't know if they're the same or not, but those Zesty Salsa Doritos were the best flavor ever. I mean, seriously. When you can still remember how good they were after 20 years?? Can we make a petition or something? PLEASE FRITO LAY - HEAR OUR PLEA! lol But, seriously though. Please. Bring these back.
Salsa Rio were absolutely distinct from any other salsa or nacho type Doritos flavors. And far superior to any of the rest. There was only one Salsa Rio. They brought them back for just two months at the beginning of this year, it was like a return to happier times. Salsa Rio was the best flavor Doritos ever introduced, hands down, no competition.
I had hoped they'dbring these back like the taco flavor. I'm still surprised they didn't.
Being them back pllleeeeeaaaaase!
I'm really jonesing for a bag right now.
Another google searcher. These were the BEST thing Frito Lay ever made! Pity they don't seem to sell them anymore or at least not where I live. Please, Frito Lay, bring 'em back!
Salsa Rios....nothing came close! Not then, not now! Apples to oranges, I know, but it's a lot like the Priazzo that Pizza Hut made back in the 80s for those of you who know what i am talking about. Those things were AWESOME compared to pizzas...sadly, another colossal "corporate decison" took that away from us as well!
Please bring the old hot Doritos in the 90's they are better than the new ones thank you
What can I say that hasn't already been said about Salsa Rio Flavor Doritos? They were, without a doubt, the best Doritos ever made! I used to work at a grocery store in high school when these were out and would have them every day on my break. And although I may be combining memories, I seem to remember washing them down with a bottle of Crystal Pepsi (Can anyone confirm that they were out at the same time?) Like everyone else, I found this forum through a Google search and was dismayed to find they re-released them 2 years ago and I missed out because they weren't available in my area. I've been borderline obsessed with these for almost 20 years and am so happy to find that I'm not the only one...No one I know remembers these except for me. I'm happy for all of you who were able to re-live the fond memories we all seem to share and I hope Frito Lay won't make us wait another 20 years to bring them back. ps: the rest of this site is pretty awesome. I miss the 90's!
I used to eat these all the time in Jr. High/high school. They came out as throwbacks a couple yrs ago, then went away. I wish they were permanent
OMG! Yes I used to LOVE these as well. I always think of 'em when I see Doritos on the shelves. They should bring 'em back even if it's only for 1 year but they should totally bring 'em back. I
Please pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssseeeeeeeeee bring them back! :(
hahaha everyone is feenin' for salsa rio doritos i dont blame you all though, they were delicious
Definitely the GOAT Doritos flavor. Please bring these back permanently. Miles above most of the weird flavors they put out.
These were my favorite flavor of all time, try all the favors, but they were the best. Found this site when I was researching to see if I could find them ANYWHERE in the US to have them shipped. Great support group, glad to see everyone else liked them, wonder if corporate will ever care if we want them or find this?
I posted here in 2011 and wow! I am still looking for Zesty Salsa diorites! They have so many crap flavors out now, why can't they bring these back?! PLEASE!!!
Hello, my name is Joe and I'm a Salsa Rio Doritoaholic. I found this website through a Google search 5 years ago and just rediscovered it. First I would like to say thank you to everyone that takes the time to post comments and read about everyone's experiences with what I will call the greatest snack food of all time. I recall my first experience with Salsa Rio Doritos. I went to a corner store to buy some chips and a drink. I went to buy a bag of BBQ chips when a kid working at the store was eating a bag of Salsa Rio Doritos. He suggested I try one. I instantly put the bag of BBQ chips back and grabbed my first bag of Salsa Rio Doritos. Chips have never been the same since. Thank you sincerely Salsa Rio Doritos pusher at the store and shame on you Frito-Lay for taking them away and putting flavours like dill pickle, ketchup and sour cream and onion in their place.
If there is magic on this planet it is contained in the salsa rio Dorito. Long live the person who created this thread.
Try the tapatio salsa that is now available. Tastes the same or very similar to me
I've been fiending for these for years. These made me love dorrito's. Bring em back!
We got the multi-pack. Every lunch, I would hope for the one with the onion and other vegetables on the front. That was 1st grade (circa 1990-91). Now no one knows what I'm talking about. I was that kid with a big BodyGlove shirt and Clear Pepsi.
The great love of my life, Salsa Rio. None shall ever take your place, my spicy little chip.
Does anyone remember another flavor with salsa in the name around the same time?!?! I swear there was one that I LOVED called salsa and cheese... or something like that. It would have been ‘89 / ‘90 ish. Unless I’m just remembering these Salsa Rio... But I swear they were also cheesy!!
I remember in like 1994,I thought it was these but they were my most FAVORITE DORITOS!!! My friends and u would destroy the bag after walking forever to get it. But I thought it was called something else salsa. It was so covered in flavor dust, so caked on, so good, so spicy, so cheesy, they were the best flavored doritos. I thought it was salsa n cheese or something like that but the bag was the orange color with veggies as pictured above... I remember that old style doritos bag.. the color was yellowish orange too. No one can remember the actual name of them, but I swear it was cheese n salsa or salsa n cheese but not that newer version that was released. Idk I could be wrong but I know they were extremely cheesy as well as packed with flavor. Cuz I like cheese and I like doritos and these rocked my world!! I was devastated when I could no longer find them and have never tasted a dorito that came close. Seriously.
My dad Rudy created the recipe for these chips. I want to say somewhere near ‘88. He started in with Frito Lay in Casa Grande Az in ‘84. Retired in 2005. He used to bring home 100’s of bags of every chip they made. When he came home he’d smell like a chip. Fritos especially.
To all old heads like me who remember that flavor like it's yesterday ,the veggies on the bag ,4/bags a buck .listen up the ONLY way we can probably get these back out there is getting genZ on it 😂 #imserious
Brian, you're full of f'n shi*!
I totally loved these chips, they are truly an all time favorite. Where did they go?? Please bring em back.
I love the salsa black bag version only available in Flaming Hot Munchies, how do these compare?
