The Nintendo 64 was a revolution in the way video games were designed. While it still used cartridges, it had a 64-bit microprocessor, which was invented only four years before it came out. The PC would not be 64-bit until 2003. It also had hardware 3D graphics with smooth scaling and anti-aliasing (earlier 3D games such as Doom used software 3D). The PlayStation was still 32-bit with blocky scaling though.
