Didn't start it all, as the first 'grunge' vid on MTV was Alice in Chains' "Man in the Box". But everyone remembers this, don't they...
90s music could not have moved forward without contributions from the following artists in the 1980s: The Replacements, Husker Du, Run-DMC, Public Enemy, Springsteen, Prince, The Clash, Green River, Mother Love Bone, R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sonic Youth, The Pixies, and a whole lot more, but I'm getting tired of writing. Honorable mentions: Pavement, Radiohead, Massive Attack, The Cure, Jeff Buckley, Stone Temple Pilots, Metallica, blah blah...

- 10. Paranoid Android by Radiohead
When I first heard this song, I hated it, but its really genious in its construction and the slow melody in the bridge is just amazingly beautiful.
- 9. She Walks Over Me by Hole
Hole was my introduction into the angry female indy rock scene. This song has my favorite lyrics of all the Hole songs: "Anorexic magazines it smells like girl, it smells like girl!"
- 8. Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana
Hands down the most influential band of the 90's. I think this song captures everything "Nirvana" in that it Kurt was a very melodic songwriter and it incorporates a sort of ballad in the beginning and a very grungy chorus.
- 7. Say You'll Be There by Spice Girls
You might not like the Spice Girls as a group, but if you are a true lover of good music, you can appreciate the production on this infectious pop song.
- 6. Uninvited by Alanis Morissette
This song draws you in from the beginning because it is modal and changes keys right in the middle of the melody. This seldomly works, but when it does, along with a fine performance by Alanis, you get this masterpiece.
- 5. Never Is A Promise by Fionna Apple
This is one of the most beautiful songs that I have ever heard the lyrics are stunning and the production is apropriately simple. A Ballad at its best.
- 4. Longview by Green Day
Green Gay "Dookie" actually my very first CD and for a while my only CD(I was a little behind the times)So I new the lyrics and riffs inside and out. This was one of the songs that I enjoyed the most.
- 3. Your Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette
This song was pivitol in my entire perspective of music because it did a perfect job of painting such an angry and emotional image. Alanis Morissettes performane and the lyrics on this song are immaculate.
- 2. Big Pimpin' by Jay-z
I put this song second merely for sentimental value because it was my introduction to the genius that is Timbaland.
- 1. Down Rodeo by Rage Against The Machine
To me, this songs lyrics expressed the essence of RATM and everything they stood for "So now I'm rollin' down Rodeo with a shotgun, these people aint seen a brown skin man since their grandparents bought one." Pure Poetry.
