there are a ton more that were great, but I wouldn't rank a single Metallica song in the top 20. They just seemed too mechanical for me. I want real emotion, maybe a lot of other people too, and that's why grunge smacked down metal's "i'm angry all the time" mood.

these are just the songs that stick out in my mind from the 90's, they're not really in a certain order. i think a lot of these songs were forgotten way too soon, i know i did not mention great bands such as nirvana, or include any other genre of music such as hip hop, i guess you can say this list is more of a personal list

    • 10. Porcelain by Moby
Generally can't abide this style of music, but this really works.
    • 9. The Chad Who Loved Me by Mansun
Quirky but effective mix of strings and guitars.
    • 8. A Design For Life by Manic Street Preachers
Had to get a Welsh band in there :)
    • 7. Winter by Tori Amos
Paints a harrowing picture with the semi-biographical content of her lyrics. Winter, however, is a little more uplifting.
    • 6. Lightning Crashes by Live
One of the greatest albums of all time. Could have chosen several songs from this CD.
    • 5. Wonderwall by Oasis
One of their few tracks which wasn't generic. Easily their best
    • 4. Loser by Beck
Genius still making great music almost a decade later.
    • 3. Novocaine For The Soul by Eels
VERY underrated band. Beautiful Freak is still one of the best debuts i've heard.
    • 2. Street Spirit (Fade Out) by Radiohead
Superb haunting melody. Perfect ending to one of the definitive rock albums of the 90s.
    • 1. Losing My Religion by R.E.M.
Forget Nirvana, R.E.M.'s Automatic For The People is the album of the decade.. Having said that, the outstanding tune by this brilliant group is Losing My Religion.

Honourable mentions go to Jeff Buckley, Elliott Smith, Super Furry Animals and the Dandy Warhols.
