    By: Chris
    • 10. Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode
This song kicked off a decade that saw the rise and fall of Manchester, Seattle, the rebirth of Woodstock, andonservative tirades about the decline of Western Civilization. Why DM? Because I saw them 3 days before I graduated high school and emabarked on the craziest 10 years of my life. I wouldn't change a thing!
    • 9. Black by Pearl Jam
It was just so damn fun to sing.
    • 8. Drown by Son Volt
Humid evenings partying with Loyola students at the local pub selling Nitrous balloons to drunks out of the back of a purple van. Good times.
    • 7. The Old Apartment by Barenaked Ladies
3 years dating a Tulane law student from a NY/Canadian border-town who was like best friends with the band.
    • 6. King of New Orleans by Better Than Ezra
When you have lived in the city you will know why. Gutter punk.
    • 5. Mr. Jones by Counting Crows
Who are these guys? They sound like their from the 60's. Bouncy roots-pop at its best.
    • 4. Bulls on Parade by Rage Against The Machine
Nothing says 90's Liberal anger like Zack De La Rocha and Co. They sigle-handedly turned an apathetic generation onto Che Guevara and social justice.
    • 3. Song for the Dumped by Ben Folds Five
In an era dominated by angry young women scorned by men, Ben and his Five finally interject a man's point of view to the whole break-up thing!
    • 2. Banditos by The Refreshments
These guys moved from being an ASU party band to breaking-up after two albums to Roger Clyne creating a fresh interpretation of honky-tonk with the Peacemakers.
    • 1. Hey Jealousy by Gin Blossoms
If you were not drunk in some frat house's stinking basement when you danced to this song with some chick you wanted to hook-up with you wouldn't understand why I chose it.

The 90's were a decade that looked to the past for its inspiration. Mechanized, vapid beats of the pop scene combined with political overkill from bands like U2 forced people to re-examine the roots of rock. Bands like Counting Crows borrowed from folk, Pearl jam took from the Doors and Led Zeppelin and Nirvana was heavily influenced by the Beatles. Why haven't I named one Nirvana song as one of the top 10 songs. It's because Kurt would have never have wanted it and he would have craved it at the same time. Creating great art and selling-out were not an inseparable dichotomy for him. He strived for commercial success and to create meaningful works at the same time and succeeded. Kurt is left out becasue he stands alone...timeless.

A lot of these songs aren't my favorites b/c I am big into the bands, but I think that they def shaped 90's music more than some of their other ones. I didn't put in any rap songs, cuz this seemed more like a rock list judging by the other enteries. I missed a lot of songs I would have loved to put in there... how can you list only 10? METALLICA IS THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME!!!!
