- 10. Meet Virginia by Train
This was a tough one. "Jumper," "Name," and "God of Wine" also come to mind.
- 9. No Rain by Blind Melon
Too short a life for this band. Would have been fun to have them around in the big time longer.
- 8. 3 a.m. by Matchbox 20
The music and lyrics go well together, but the live piano-acoustic version of the song is even better.
- 7. Crush by Dave Matthews Band
Bass on it is great. "Each moment / The more / I / Love / You."
- 6. Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind
This song mainstreamed and marked the end the era of the successful fast-paced modern rock hit. Who before ever would have thought that a song about a speed user could be so popular and so well written?
- 5. Round Here by Counting Crows
"She says she's tired of life / She must be tired of something." They tell it like it is and make a great song out of it.
- 4. Losing My Religion by R.E.M.
It all comes together. Stipe said they wrote it in less than an hour. Productive hour.
- 3. Black Balloon by Goo Goo Dolls
More the music than the lyrics, but we must remember one line: "And there's no time left for losing."
- 2. Hold My Hand by Hootie and the Blowfish
Acoustics have a feel to them, and this song maximizes acoustical use.
- 1. Motorcycle Drive By by Third Eye Blind
"I've never been so alone / And I've / Never been so alive." Powerful lyrics that are not as depressing as they seem if you spend a day in NYC, such as this one: "Summertime and the wind is blowing outside / in Lower Chelsea." Great Riff at 1:02 into the song.
I do have a bias towards easy rock. But these songs will be the ones studied for their musical excellence years from now. Rap will be studied too, but only to figure out what the hell was wrong with us.
