If you've never heard anything by Beth Orton, you're missing something. Gorgeous melodies and a voice to fall in love with

REM finally made a rock album. Took them long enough
    • 1. Brian Wilson by Barenaked Ladies
A perfect pop song examining the creative process

I know I picked too many of the better known bands. There were a few that probably deserve to be on here, given their impact in the 90's (Nirvana, Radiohead, Bjork, Tool, Sarah MacLachlan, etc.) but this list is really about individual songs, not the bands themselves. So I think these songs overall are a fair choice.

    • 10. Sober by Tool
Tool is simply an intelligent rock band. Nothing more, nothing less.
    • 9. Sugar by System Of A Down
In a time where so-called "Nu-Metal" bands comparable to boybands spring up like mushrooms, System Of A Down produce their own unique sound, while still providing the grooves the producers of cloned-bands like Linkin Park, Crazy Town... use to target their kiddy-audience
    • 8. Flesh And The Power It Holds by Death
Chuck Schuldiner is godlike in his ways of playing the guitar. Even if you totally hate death-metal, if you're a musician, you should listen to this song, and bow down to his techniques
    • 7. Out Of Space by The Prodigy
Starting as a house/rave band, Prodigy can now be considered a rock band, but without using the old ways of producing rock sound, substituting instruments for computers
    • 6. Closer by Nine Inch Nails
The other great man of industrial and production: Trent Reznor. With a minimalist but still complicated sound he prepared the path for Marilyn Manson and comparable bands
    • 5. Jesus Built My Hotrod by Ministry
Ministry is the most influential industrial band in the genre. Others like Fear Factory or Prong imitated their style
    • 4. Nothing Else Matters by Metallica
Although I generally like harder stuff, and I think that "One" or "Dyers Eve" is better, both are from the 80s, so Nothing Else Matters is my pick for the 90s
    • 3. All I Need by Air
Air revolutionalized the Easy Listening genre. "Moon Safari" is also amongst the top ten albums of the 90s
    • 2. Killing In The Name Of by Rage Against The Machine
Crossover with political lyrics and an unmatched groove and unmatched live energy. Sadly they've also split up
    • 1. Epic by Faith No More
One of the most unique styles and mixtures. Sadly they don't exist anymore

OK, my listing is more to the heavy side, but on most lists above I found people listing the stereotypes of the charts of the nineties, forgetting the music that really changed stylea all over the world. OK, maybe I should've added Nirvana, but I only habe 10 slots...
