What are your top ten favorite songs from the 90s?

    By: Summer
    • 10. Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana
Nirvana, a band whose frontman, Kurt Cobain, is in my opinion both iconic and uniquely effective and a tremendous attribute to both music and literature. Although picking only one Nirvana song is indeed a difficult task, I felt that this song captured something intricate and signature of Cobain that was part of why he was so beloved. He had this intriguing ability to capture the theme of the inner mind, the thought process, and the intense intercourse of the innocent mind and soul interpreting and "handling" frustration, rage, language, romance, and truth. A voice for those barred by language and a partner and figure for those seeking release.
    • 9. Cryin by Aerosmith
I love this song! I love Aerosmith and all the songs in the Alicia Silverstone trilogy but this one definitely is amazing. One of those songs when I wanted to be that girl he was talking about. Great song!
    • 8. Possession by Sarah MacLachlan
The voice of an angel paired with the lyrics of this song sends chills up my spine. Everytime I hear this song I am reminded of a literary tragedy, or something. Her voice is ethereal and poignant and the lyrics ring in your mind. Beautiful.
    • 7. Santeria by Sublime
Sublime is awesome. Who would disagree. Totally fun and oh so talented. I couldn't decide between Santeria and Date Rape. Both major favorites of mine. Santeria is definitely one of those songs you pop in at a party and everyone knows the words and somehow feel liberated like, " thank god he said it so now i can too...ah, sweet release"
    • 6. Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Californication really catapulted Red Hot Chili Peppers into my top list for great songs. The lyrics are beautiful and so well done. This is one song that i had to stop and put my ear to the speaker and listen to the words and thank God there is still poetry in music.
    • 5. Losin My Religion by R.E.M.
R.E.M. what list would be complete without them? So talented and so unique and such beautiful music. But i definitely think this song represents a place in the nineties. This was one I couldn't run away from on local stations and thank God for that. I was introduced to R.E.M. with this song and am loving them still.
    • 4. Weezer by Say It Ain't So
So many songs of Weezer to choose from. One of my favorite bands. Their style is so great and their music is just...oustanding...but this is one for the repeat button and definitely one for the nineties. This one and Island in the Sun. Great Band!
    • 3. U2 by One
U2. Enough said. This song made me want to do good things. So moving. Bono's voice and the lyrics were made for each other!
    • 2. Paranoid Android by Radiohead, The Bends
As a die hard Radiohead fan, choosing the best or most representational is impossible and unfair. I chose Paranoid Android because it is classic Radiohead and intense commitment of self on behalf of the listener. This song from its opening notes and bars invades the soul and detaches repression and reveals it only to its owner. It always gives me chills. It allows itself to be the soundtrack for this imaginative literary journey that is personal and evoking. I could sing the praises of this band forever. I LOVE RADIOHEAD!
    • 1. Who Knew by Eminem, The Marshall Mathers LP
I don't know if this is actually nineties. I could look but I won't because I want it to make my list. I am a fan of eminem and think is truly a great writer. I think its absurd to not at least recognize it even if you're not a fan. This song isn't as well known, but I definitely think it captures classic Eminem and was a forum for so many topics and allows us a window in to his rhyming formula. i really love Eminem.
