What are your top ten favorite songs from the 90s?
By: DJ Midas
- 10. Your Woman by White Town
This is about the only song of the 90's that I can stand to hear on the radio in heavy rotation.
- 9. Miami by Will Smith
Can't help but to sing along to this catchy tune.
- 8. Give it Up by The Goodmen
Great tribal drums and "carnival" whistles. Still in rotation at the club I work at.
- 7. Twilight Zone/Get Ready for This by 2 Unlimited
The anthems of the Jock Jams. Let's get ready to rumble.
- 6. James Brown is Dead by L. A. Style
The song that introduced me to the techno sound in America. Very energy driven. Of course I still dig the Godfather of Soul despite this track.
- 5. Another Night by Real McCoy
Great Club Song. Reminds me of a night out on the town.
- 4. Set U Free (Fever Mix) by Planet Soul
"Gravity & energy make you feel good, just do it, and welcome to my Planet Soul." Just grrrrooovvveeey baby.
- 3. Sex on the Streets by Pizzaman
This is the infamous artist aka Fatboy Slim, aka Mighty Dub Kats, aka Norman Cook (of Beats International & Housemartins). Combining some get-off-your-ass & dance rhythms, whoots & hollers and a sample of (I think) Richard Nixon, If you're into techno, this was one of the great anthems of '95!
- 2. Far Out by Sonz of a Loop Da Loop Era
This is my favorite old skool hardcore breakbeat song of all time. Danny Breaks did a superb job of creating such a great anthem. The piano lines are awesome!!! "This Kid's gonna be far out!"
- 1. Next is the E (I Feel It) by Moby
I named my cat after him, since when he was a kitten he had these big bulging eyes that were bigger than his body, and it reminded me of the caricature Moby drew & autographed on one of my 12" singles. Energetic & uplifting pianos. "I feel it!"
My list should probably be labeled the top 10 sampled songs of the 90's. Honorable mentions go to: "O.P.P." by Naughty by Nature, "Da Funk" by Daft Punk, "The Bomb (These Sounds Fall Into My Mind)" by the Bucketheads and anything by the Cappella/Anticappella/MIG-29 & MIG-33 camp.

The best this band has ever done.
- 6. Runaway Train by Soul Asylum
Another Great Video, and it was a very moving song.

This song reinvented rock.
- 3. Tonight, Tonight by Smashing Pumpkins
Hit MTV with a storm in the mid to late 90's.

While the 90's may have been a dissapointment for the most part, when it comes to culture at least, there were a few good songs. The best of those good songs, are as listed.

Snoop Doggy Dogg, Dr.Dre, Tupac... Gangsta Rap & hip hop really influenced 90s fashion in a major way, and these guys were major contributors.
- 5. November Rain by Guns N' Roses
The last great rock n' roll song. I heard that Slash did the solo in one take and with a hang over.

Incredible album.. 'nuff said.
- 2. Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana
What can I say? The world discovered grunge cos of them, whether they liked it or not.
- 1. Can't Touch This by MC Hammer
Greatest song of the 90s? Maybe. But it was definitely influential. It brought rap to the mainstream and around the world. He finished off where Run DMC had stopped, and allowed the current rap artists to get to where they are now (in my opinion).
Honorable mentions: Live & Learn - Joe Public, Saturday Night - Whigfield, Jazzy Jeff & the Freshprince, Pearl Jam and tons more I could never fit here. I think a big thing in the 90s (and late 80s too) was the diversity of music people listened to. I think a lot of people listened to rap, rock, grunge..etc.. and didn't just stick to one type.
